Chandelier Size and Height Above Tables
Two of the most important factors to consider when deciding what size chandelier for a table are the size of the table and the height of the ceiling the lighting fixture is being installed onto.
It is critical that the hanging fixture is proportional to the table; too small and it will seem insignificant to the area–too large and it will detract from the rest of the room’s decor, as well as obstruct the view from across the table.
The rule of thumb of thumb, regarding the size of a chandelier above the table, is anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 the width of the table. (i.e. a table that is 40 inches wide and 60 inches long would be best served with a chandelier with a diameter of 20 – 30 inches in size). If your table is very long, it is recommended to go on the higher side of the range.
Choosing the perfect height for your chandelier is also quite vital to be completely happy with your lighting purchase. The rule of thumb for what size chandelier height, over a table is approximately 30 to 34 inches over a table with an 8-foot ceiling height. If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, mount the chandelier an additional 3 inches higher for each foot of ceiling.
Chandelier size and height for a room without a table
Hanging a chandelier in an entryway/foyer, living room, hallway or any other open space room is a great way to add a touch of elegance and class to your home. Another by-product is the incredible ambient lighting that is provided by a chandelier, especially when it is dressed in crystal!
A general rule of thumb to determine the correct size for the lighting fixture is to add the length and width of the entryway/foyer/large room in feet and convert that to inches; then use that as your diameter. (i.e. a room that is 20 feet by 22 feet should have a chandelier with the diameter of 42 inches.)
An important note to consider is that height of the room should be proportioned to the length and width of the room, in order for the chandelier to hang properly. The lowest point of the chandelier should be no lower that 78 inches from the ground.
A chandelier that is to be hung in an entryway/foyer should follow a few simple rules, in order to look proper in its place:
- The fixture should be hung in the center of the room.
- If the entryway has a window above the door, it should be centered, within the window, so it can be seen from the outside.
- In the case that the foyer is two levels, the chandelier should not be hung below the first level
- If the foyer is one level, the bottom of the chandelier should hang around 84 inches from the ground.
When hanging a chandelier above a dining room table, it is best to align center and the chandelier with the table.
A Chandeliers Installation
A chandeliers installation involves both electronic and structural connections. So, you need the help of an expert for assembling and installing your fixture. The ones that are heavy should be installed on high ceilings. Prior to placement, you will need to check if the area of installation requires some structural upgrade or not. A contractor with adequate skills and equipment will be able to ensure a safe and perfect installation.
The size of the chandelier is another aspect that you will need to take into consideration. You can consult the contractor to select a fixture that will provide sufficient amount of light for your room. The normal time taken for installing a chandelier is a few hours. However, the setup time depends on the accessibility of the installation site and assembly related needs. Adequate attention will also need to be paid to the mounting structure and condition of wiring. Complete installation may take an entire day.
Choosing Light Bulbs
People invest a good amount of money in buying and installing lighting fixtures within their homes. Yet to provide sufficient illumination to rooms, considerable attention needs to be paid to the light bulb which is being installed within the room. If you are going to install lighting fixtures in your home within a few days, then you will need to have a good understanding of basics of light bulbs. First, match the wattage amount of the light bulb with the light fixture.
All light bulbs come with a specific wattage, which usually ranges between 40-120 watts. Similarly, all light fixtures come with a maximum wattage amount. So, you will need to choose a light bulb with a wattage amount which is lower or equal to the maximum wattage of the lighting fixture. This is because a light bulb with wattage over the maximum capacity a lighting fixture can handle can cause the outbreak of fire.
The next thing that you will need to take into consideration is the amount of light the bulb will emit. It is measured in lumens. The greater the number of lumens, the brighter will be the light emitted by the bulb. So, if you are planning to use a light bulb for illuminating a big room, you need to go for one which comes with at least 1000 lumens.
Next, you will need to pay attention to the durability of the light bulb, modern chandeliers. The life span of each bulb tends to vary. If you are going to install the bulb in a lighting fixture, go for the one that has a greater durability as compared to the one that is used in a table lamp.
LED bulbs have the longest durability among all light bulbs you would come across. Usually, they come with a warranty period of 15,000 hours. Also, take into account the energy costs associated with the light bulb. Traditional light bulbs are not known to be energy efficient. Therefore, you will need to go for the ones that come with a low lifetime cost, modern chandeliers. Though you may have to pay a higher price while buying such a bulb, you will derive benefits of choosing in the long run. Want a guide to clean your lights? Visit here or to get live updates here
